What are the Basic Roles & Responsibilities of the Board of Selectmen?
The select board serves as a town's chief executive body. They have overall responsibility for the general operations of town government. They are authorized to enter into contracts on behalf of the municipality. While most other town boards, offices and departments serve a particular function (e.g., Planning Board, Highway, etc), the select board’s responsibilities are much broader. Their job is often one of sorting out the various positions of different departments and boards to determine the best overall course of action for the town. Select boards play an active and strong role in the financial management of the town. They are the executive, managerial and administrative body that does what is necessary to carry out the votes enacted at the annual town meeting. In addition to managing the “prudential affairs of the Town”, there are many other assigned roles and duties. See Revised Statutes Annotated (RSA) 41:8 State of NH.
